What is FERPA?

Body

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. All Motlow State employees undergo FERPA training yearly to ensure compliance with any new regulations. FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children's education records. However, the rights transfer to the student when he or she reaches the age of 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level. To read more about FERPA, please click here.

Because of this, Technical Operations will request to speak with the student in question if a password needs to be reset by a TechOps personnel and are unable to assist if the personnel member cannot confirm who he or she is talking with. The only exception to this is when a FERPA release is on file, in which case the personnel member can ask questions to confirm that he or she is talking with an authorized person.

Please note that if Technical Operations cannot confirm who he or she is talking to or if a FERPA release is on file, Technical Operations will refuse to assist with any request.
